3 Tips for Switching to Natural Deodorant

November 18, 2020

Switching to natural deodorant might be one of the most daunting tasks. The journey is not pretty, or easy, but I have three tips today that can help make your switch to natural deodorant a little easier.

What To Avoid in Your Deodorant

Conventional antiperspirant deodorants have ingredients in them which block off your pores. This is why you will notice you don’t smell or sweat as much with conventional deodorants.

Since we apply deodorant to our under arms everyday, chemicals are easily absorbed into our pores. The number one ingredient we want to worry about is aluminum. Studies show it can increase our chance of breast cancer with consistent exposure over time.

Along with aluminum, we want to worry about sulfates, parabens, and fragrance. These ingredients are linked to skin irritations and hormonal disruptions.

My Experience with Switching to a Natural Deodorant

My exprience with switching to a natural deodorant has been a long journey. I’ll be honest, it stunk. (literally and figuratively) When you lose those chemicals I listed above, you will sweat more and smell, initially.

One of the biggest reasons you have body odor right when you switch is because your body is detoxifying itself from the chemicals it was used to receiving every day. Your detox period can take 2 weeks or even a little longer.

I felt like my detox period only took about 2 weeks, but a smell does tend to come back (more on this later). During these two weeks I noticed I was sweating a lot more than usual. I also felt like I smelt majority of the time, no matter what deodorant I used.

I was also used to the “24 hour wear” that many conventional deodorants provide you and that is not the case with natural deodorants. Majority of natural deodorants will work for about 8 hours.

I would give yourself a solid 4 weeks to adjust to a natural deodorant to be safe. Since we are in a pandemic and barely gathering, there is no better time than the present.

Tip 1: Help Your Body Detox

I used a mask on my arm pits. Yes, I know. It sounds wild. However, if you think of your arm pits as a place where you have large pores, of course we want to put a mask there to pull out all the junk.

A mask can help quicken the process of pulling the toxins out, but can also alleviate those pores, which are dying for a break.

I used the Beautycounter charcoal mask because that was what I owned. However, arm pit masks have become a thing. Megababe makes an under arm mask that has received a lot of great reviews.

Tip 2: Carry a Mini Deodorant in Your Purse

Since you don’t have the 24 hour coverage you are used to, you will want to carry a mini deodorant in your purse to freshen up. I notice that if I am nervous, wearing a low quality material, or running around, that the smell and sweat might be back, even after my detox period. I always feel confident that I can pull my mini deodorant out and freshen up.

Tip 3: Put in the Work

The process is long and hard. You have to be willing to put in the energy to switch your body over. Taking more body showers while using natural deodorants will become a regular things. I sometimes carry deodorizing wipes too. You will want to switch up what deodorant you are using, which is so fun. There are so many natural deodorants on the market that you can have fun switching up with scents.

If after a number of weeks you notice that you are still smelling, consider looking at your diet. After you have released the toxins that were stored in your arm pits, it is very possible that your body is releasing other toxins, which could be coming from your diet. You should avoid processed foods, up your fiber, and aim to eat whole foods whenever possible.

My Favorite Natural Deodorants

As you can see from the first picture on this post, I have tried A LOT of natural deodorants. The number one deodorant in my mind is Primally Pure.

There are a wide variety of scents. It glides on really smoothly. It is a true sentiment to less is more. I only do one swipe of this and I am set for the day. My favorite scent is Geranium. You can order Primally Pure on subscribe and save so you never are without deodorant. Try Primally Pure deodorant and use the code classicallyclad10 for 10% off your purchase.

The second place winner would be Beautycounter, which will launch in January 2021. Try the minis here.

As a consultant, I had the opportunity to start using Beautycounter deodorant in June 2020. I will say, it is my number one choice for scents. I love how light and florally Beautycounter made their deodorant. It is also so smooth when you apply it. My only complaint is that I don’t get as many wearable hours in a day with it compared to Primally Pure’s deodorant.

As you can see, switching to natural deodorant does not need to be a scary process. I felt like the more educated I was, the easier the process of switching to natural deodorant came. I hope this post is able to educate you and make your switch to natural deodorant a little easier.
