How To Style A Plaid Skirt
I think it is obvious that plaid has taken over the Fall and Winter trends this year. You have seen plenty of plaid scarfs, dresses, and tops! They are all being styled and flooding your Instagram feeds I am sure. Have you thought about plaid skirts? I know, they can be intimidating, but I am here to show you that a tartan skirt can be worn for any season. Today I am sharing with you how to style a plaid skirt multiple ways this winter and holiday season.
How to Style A Plaid Skirt
Plaid skirts can be dressed up or dressed down. I want to give you as many plaid skirt outfit ideas as I can, all with one tartan plaid skirt. Styling a plaid skirt can be easy. You need to know multiple ways to style a plaid skirt so you can get multiple wears out of the skirt. You can style it for work, a holiday party, with a cardigan, over-the-knee boots, and many other ways!
My Love For Plaid
I started loving plaid when I was a little girl. I probably have my Mom to thank for that. She would dress me up in plaid skirts and dresses around the holidays. If it wasn’t a red tartan plaid, it was a light pink and green plaid in the summer. I feel like I still dress in these plaids today.
Look at this post from a few years ago of me in my plaid skirt for the holidays.
Anyways, sorry for the side story! Let’s get into all the ways you can style your tartan plaid skirt.
For A Holiday Party
Tartan Skirt – the one I wear in all these looks. It is a form fitting skirt, so I went up a size to get a more relaxed fit. – I linked more tartan skirts that I love at the bottom of this post | White Embellished Sweater (on sale today with the code FRIENDS40)| Earrings – under $10!| Black Heels (mine are old but here are similar open toe) (here is a closed toe option)
The holiday parties feel endless in my mind! I always like to show up to them comfortable, but also making a statement with my outfit. A plaid tartan skirt is the best way to make a statement through the holiday season.
A lightweight sweater, like the one I have on here, will look great with the skirt. Try to pull one of the colors from your skirt. Just not the red color. I went with the cream color to look more winter white.
Throw on a pretty black heel to finish off the outfit. I broke my rule and did open toe, but that is because I know not everyone who reads this blog is in Chicago. If you are in the south, you can get away with no tights and open toe shoes!
All my readers in the north, do NOT wear open toe shoes. My rule is basically after October 1, we shouldn’t ever wear an open toe shoe. To complete this look, throw on some closed toe pumps and black tights.
With An Oversized Sweater
Tartan Skirt – the one I wear in all these looks. It is a form fitting skirt, so I went up a size to get a more relaxed fit. – I linked more tartan skirts that I love at the bottom of this post | Over-sized sweater – runs really big, I would size down 1-2 sizes. Currently 40% off with code 40DEC18. | My boots are from Italy, but here are a similar | My earrings
If you want to go with a more casual look, you can style this tartan plaid skirt with an over-sized sweater. This will make you super cozy and comfortable.
Since the over-sized sweater is casual, you can totally throw on your favorite pair of tall boots. I chose my brown boots, but you could definitely wear your black tall boots too. If you have tall, chunky boot socks, that would look cute with this over-sized sweater look too.
If you have over-the-knee boots, those boots would also look super cute with an over-sized sweater. The over-the-knee boots is not a trend that I have jumped on, but I know it looks super cute on a lot of people!
Since the over-sized sweater is a little boring by itself, I decided to have fun with my earrings, which made the look a little fancier. Playing with accessories during the holiday season is one of my favorite things to do!
With A Long Cardigan
Tartan Skirt – the one I wear in all these looks. It is a form fitting skirt, so I went up a size to get a more relaxed fit. – I linked more tartan skirts that I love at the bottom of this post | Bell Sleeve Sweater – true to size. 50% with code HELLOSALE | Layering tank top – true to size and not see-through. Currently 20% off and available in 7 colors. | Similar tall boots | Necklace
Throwing on a long cardigan with your tartan skirt is also another option. Depending on the material of the cardigan, it will dictate how fancy or casual your look is.
I have on a cotton long cardigan here, so that made this look much more casual. To keep with the casual trend, I kept on my tall boots. I chose my brown boots because the sweater is a tan color.
If I were to wear a white, black, or grey sweater, I would have chosen my black boots!
Whenever I wear cardigans, this tank top is always my favorite to wear under them. They are lightweight, but not see-through. They also hand really nicely.
I think my favorite part about this long cardigan is the bell, ruffle sleeve. I can’t get enough of it. Bell sleeves are a huge trend this year that I have been all over. I think the bell sleeve adds a nice finishing touch to the long cardigan, instead of it just being some boring, dumpy looking cardigan.
To Work
Tartan Skirt – the one I wear in all these looks. It is a form fitting skirt, so I went up a size to get a more relaxed fit. – I linked more tartan skirts that I love at the bottom of this post | White blouse – true to size – 40% off with code 40DEC18. | Flats (from same retailer) – I love these too. | Tights – order true to size. Here is a cheaper version that I also like.
If you want to wear a tartan skirt to work, this is where you should definitely throw on your tights. I feel like any office I have ever worked in is always freezing so you will thank me later that you wore the tights.
I was never brave enough to risk wearing a heel to work, so I went with a flat. These flats are some of my favorite and most comfortable. I never have to break in any of my shoes from J. Crew.
I decided to go with a crisp, lightweight white button-up for the office. If you work in a more professional setting, this look is going to be perfect for your office! I sincerely hope they let you have some fun and wear a tartan skirt, instead of just a grey or black suit every day.
If you work in a more casual office, I think my over-sized sweater look is the best option for you to wear to work! The over-sized sweater is definitely a warm sweater for your chilly office.
For Winter
Tartan Skirt – the one I wear in all these looks. It is a form fitting skirt, so I went up a size to get a more relaxed fit. – I linked more tartan skirts that I love at the bottom of this post | My coat – ON SALE! runs big, order one size down. |My sweater – runs true to size | My hat – similar | My gloves – similar |Flats (from same retailer) – I love these too. | Tights – order true to size. Here is a cheaper version that I also like.
Just because it is a skirt, doesn’t mean it can’t be worn in the winter. I have told you earlier in this post that a skirt is totally acceptable in the winter, as long as you wear tights. I don’t want to see any bare legs in skirts in Chicago girls!
If you want to go for a dressier winter look, I always throw on this black jacket. I love how it pulls the black detailing from the skirt.
Throw on a warm sweater, an adorable hat, and your favorite gloves, and you have yourself the perfect look for winter.
You could also throw on black over-the-knee boots with this look for winter.
